How to Select the Right Linear Actuator

Choosing the right DC-powered linear actuator depends on the requirements of your application. Consider the following factors when evaluating your options.

1

Capacity & Travel

Determine how much force and movement your application requires.

  • Capacity: force required to move and hold the load
  • Travel: required distance or range of motion
2

Voltage & Speed

Match the actuator to your power supply and required operating speed.

  • Voltage: Power required by the actuator
  • Speed: How quickly the load must move
3

Duty Cycle & Orientation

Consider how the actuator will operate within your system.

  • Duty cycle: percentage of time the actuator is in motion
  • Orientation: direction in which the actuator’s force is applied
4

Operating Environment

Consider the conditions where the actuator will operate.

  • Operating conditions
  • Temperature requirements
  • Environmental protection requirements
