Project: Industrial Pipe and Duct Crossover Platforms

Challenge: Workers climbed over or walked across pipes and ducts to move through the facility
Solution: Pre-engineered ErectaStep crossover platforms configured for different obstacle widths
Result: Permanent, guarded walkways that provide a safer route over piping and ductwork
Workers regularly needed to cross areas filled with piping and ductwork. Without a designated walkway, some employees climbed over the obstacles or attempted to walk across them, leading to slips, falls, and ankle injuries.
CH Bull developed modular crossover options that created a clear route over the equipment without requiring major changes to the facility.
The Challenge
The facility contained several areas where pipes and ducts blocked normal walking paths. Employees needed a safer way to move through these spaces without stepping on or climbing across the equipment.
Because the obstacles varied in width, the crossover systems also needed to accommodate different spans while fitting within the available floor space.
Evaluating the Design Options
CH Bull developed crossover configurations based on the width of the piping and ductwork at each location.
Option 1A: Dual-Stair Crossover
A guarded platform with stairs on both sides creates a convenient walk-up route over piping and ductwork.
Option 1B: Stair-Ladder Crossover
A guarded platform with stairs on one side and a fixed ladder on the other reduces the required floor space.
Option 2: Extended-Span Crossover
An extended guarded platform spans wider areas of piping and ductwork using the same modular stair components.
The CH Bull Solution
The customer selected ErectaStep dual-stair crossover systems configured for the different obstacles throughout the facility. The required components were available from CH Bull’s South San Francisco inventory and shipped within one week.
The customer’s team completed the installation, assembling the bolt-together components to create permanent access over the piping and ductwork.
Project Outcome
The completed systems gave employees a designated way to cross the piping and ductwork without climbing on the equipment. The modular platforms also provide flexibility if future layout changes require the systems to be moved or reconfigured.
