Hydraulic Jacking System Raises Oakland Container Cranes 20 Feet

Project Snapshop

Project: Oakland Container Crane Leg Extension
Location: Oakland, California
Application: Raising container cranes for leg extensions
Challenge: Lift 700-ton cranes 20 feet so new leg sections could be added
Solution: Eight 200-ton double-acting jacks controlled by a central hydraulic pump
Result: A reusable system that helped raise container cranes for many years

oakland container hydraulic system

In the mid-1970s, CH Bull worked with Rigging International to design a hydraulic jacking system for raising existing container cranes instead of replacing them.

As container ships became taller, the cranes needed additional height. CH Bull’s system raised the 700-ton cranes approximately 20 feet so extended leg sections could be installed.

The CH Bull Solution

The system used eight 200-ton double-acting jacks arranged in four pairs and controlled by a central gas-powered hydraulic pump.

With 1,200 tons of total capacity, the system gave Rigging International a practical way to raise the cranes safely and repeatedly.

Project Outcome

The custom jacking system helped Rigging International extend crane height without replacing the cranes. The system was used successfully for many years.
